Habeas Cropus - A Narrative Game

A Short narrative game made for the 2025 Narrative Design Awards Game Jam on itch.io

'HABEAS CROPUS' is a mystery fantasy point-and-click where you play as Shrubwell, a newly appointed Judge in a fantasy world where plants have gained sentience and entered peaceful society with humans, elves, dwarves and beasts. In this world, the rule of law is sanctimonious and Judge's are the highest place one can be in society. As Shrubwell, it is up to you to weigh the evidence presented to you - and even find evidence yourself - to resolve a dispute between a Tree-Ent and a farmer.

FEEDBACK

"Habeas Cropus was the personal favourite of Panel Judge Sae Byol Kim"

A standout for its original worldbuilding, Habeas Cropus places the player in the role of Shrubwell — a sentient plant-judge born from druidic magic in a rule-of-law-based fantasy society populated by elves, dwarves, and other species. The core of the game lies in investigating and ruling on the 'Trent vs. Melvin' case. The player explores scenes, discovers 'awakened' corn and mana crystals, and must make judicial decisions based on their findings. This blend of legal drama mechanics and plant-based magical elements makes it a clever and engaging interpretation of the plant growth theme.

The player's judgment determines not only the trial’s outcome but also their own trajectory under the watchful eyes of higher-ranking magistrates. This dynamic creates meaningful stakes and room for character growth based on player choices and performance. The visual and musical design complements the tone well, reinforcing the immersive atmosphere. We especially liked how you were able to tie in the importance and weight of the secret cult of rogue druids! Overall, it was excellent work, we hope you're super proud.
